The Cabarita Deck, part of the RTS Tingira Water Activities and Training Centre, is a significant asset for Girl Guides Australia. The property, acquired in the 1960s, has been a cornerstone for various activities and events. The restoration project focused on replacing the existing treated pine deck with more durable materials and adding new features to enhance its functionality and longevity.
The original deck, constructed in treated pine, was not holding up well against the harsh saltwater environment. It lacked the durability required for a structure constantly exposed to the elements. Additionally, the need for regular maintenance, such as oiling and sealing, was crucial to protect the deck over time. The challenge was to upgrade the deck with materials that could withstand these conditions while maintaining the aesthetic and functional integrity of the space.
The new deck was constructed using ironbark red and river gum red hardwood timbers, chosen for their greater durability in saltwater conditions. This choice ensures a longer lifespan for the deck with reduced maintenance needs. A new balustrade, made of powder-coated aluminium, was installed to provide safety and withstand environmental wear and tear. Additionally, a sliding roller gate was added, facilitating the movement of boats for maintenance purposes. This comprehensive approach not only revitalised the deck but also prepared it for future generations of Girl Guides to enjoy. The Girl Guides recently celebrated their 150-year anniversary, marking a new chapter on the restored deck.
