Alexandria Park Temporary High School

Progroup’s experienced project team swung its resources into action and had the site established and early works commenced within 2 weeks of being approached by the Dept of Education and 1 week of the CDC being issued. The establishment was carried out in a live environment and required detailed planning and close consultation with both the primary school and high school, which were adjacent to the site.

The project team faced numerous challenges, during the construction of the early works. The site was bounded by a number of large trees which were to be retained and their root systems protected. Progroup carried out detailed root mapping and worked with the project engineers to relocate the screw piles and introduce bridging beams to allow the foundations to be installed without damaging any of the tree root systems.

Progroup was also advised that the adjacent site had encountered asbestos fragments during recent building works and all ground works for the temporary school site were required to be carried out under the supervision of licenced asbestos hygienists with strict attention to dust control, due to the building activity on the neighbouring Alexandria Park High School. 

Upon commencing the bored piers and foundations, the ground was also found to have broken concrete, steel railway sleepers and old fuel tanks buried under the surface. Specialist contractors and machinery were engaged to deal with these issues without the program being affected or works delayed.

The site was also traversed by a major Sydney Water stormwater drain and required liaison and planning with Sydney Water for approval to carry out the works adjacent to the drain.

The Dept of Education also requested Progroup to manage and co-ordinate procurement of long lead time equipment including the lift and main switchboards, which were ordered and installed by Progroup.

To Progroup’s credit, it successfully overcame a suite of abnormal challenging obstacles thus facilitating handover of the works in time for use at commencement of the 2018 school year.
